Vinyl – One of the Most Sustainable Materials on Earth
Let’s look at Vinyl as a building material. Vinyl is used for many applications such as flooring, wall-covering, siding, buried water main and sewer piping, and industrial process piping. Vinyl has many benefits as a construction material such as corrosion-resistance, abrasion-resistance, superior strength, and longevity. Vinyl construction materials are also light-weight and easy to install. But how does Vinyl stack-up in the Sustainability department?
Firstly, the basic raw materials for Vinyl are natural gas, saltwater and air. There is an abundant supply of natural gas in North America, and more deposits are being discovered every day. We have a virtually unlimited supply of salt water and unlimited supply of air. So in terms of natural resources, Vinyl is easily sustainable. Vinyl scores high for natural resources as its raw materials are in virtually unlimited supply, and it scores high for the environment as it is 100 percent recyclable. If Vinyl does not meet the definition of a truly sustainable material, what does?

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of vinyl fencing?
Vinyl fencing is durable, low-maintenance, and resistant to weather, pests, and rot. It also comes in a variety of styles and colors to suit your needs.
Will a vinyl fence turn yellow or become brittle in the hot coastal sun?
It is completely understandable to worry about sun damage, but premium, modern vinyl fencing is specifically engineered to handle harsh exposure. The vinyl we install is manufactured with titanium dioxide and advanced UV inhibitors. These additives act like high-SPF sunscreen for your fence, ensuring the material will not yellow, chalk, or become brittle over time—even under constant, direct sunlight.
How does vinyl hold up against salt spray and moisture compared to traditional wood?
Vinyl is arguably the best material for handling the realities of a marine environment. Because it is non-porous and completely inorganic, it is impervious to salt spray, high humidity, and rot. While wood fences in coastal areas require rigorous sealing, staining, and eventual replacement due to water damage or pests, vinyl will never absorb moisture, warp, rust, or splinter.
What is the best way to clean sand, salt, and mildew off my vinyl fence?
One of the biggest advantages of a vinyl fence is how easy it is to maintain. To keep it looking pristine, simply rinse it with a standard garden hose every few weeks to wash away abrasive sand and salt buildup. If you notice any stubborn dirt or minor mildew caused by coastal dampness, a quick wipe-down with a soft sponge, warm water, and a mild dish soap (Simple Green) is all you need to restore its original look.
